Sisters of Mercy Video

Posted in Music with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 9, 2009 by victorbiola

Just a short video by the Sisters of Mercy that I have found on YouTube. I love this song from the 80’s. Don’t know if you can relate to this but I love it. Leave a note with your thoughts. Here are the lyrics to the song, which is partly sung in German…

In a sea of faces, in a sea of doubt
In this cruel place your voice above the maelstrom
In the wake of this ship of fools I’m falling further down
If you can see me, Marian, reach out and take me home…..
Marian I think I’m drowning
This sea is killing me

I hear you calling Marian
Across the water, across the wave
I hear you calling Marian
Can you hear me calling you to
Save me, save me, save me from the

Marian, there’s a weight above me
And the pressure is all too strong
To breathe deep
Breathe long and hard
To take the water down and go to sleep
To sink still further
Beneath the fatal wave

Was ich kann und was ich konnte (What I can do and what I could do)
Weiß ich gar nicht mehr (I just don’t know anymore)
Gib mir wieder etwas schönes (Give me something beautiful again)
Zieh mich aus dem Meer (Drag me from the sea)
Ich hör’ dich rufen, Marian (I hear you calling Marian)
Kannst du mich schreien hören? (Can you hear me calling?)
Ich bin hier allein (I am here alone)
Ich hör’ dich rufen, Marian (I hear you calling Marian)
Ohne deine Hilfe verliere ich mich in diesem Ort (Without your help I am lost in this place)

CHORUS (repeat Marian til end)

How Is This For Funky?

When researching music and looking through feedback for a previous post <Vote For Your Favourite Seductive Song> I stumbled over this jewel of a late 70s funky number: Shame by Evelyn King aka Evelyn Champagne King.

evelyn-king-smooth-talkThere are some seriously good tracks to come by in the late 70s, but every now and then you know that you have heard something special. This is one of the best tracks I have heard in a long time.

Evelyn King is very natural in her performance, her voice is crisp and sensual and the beat is funky and with a great guitarre tune to accompany it. Click below to hear it for yourself.

Life is full of surprises and I have just learnt that Shame is also on the soundtrack of the Rock City game Vice City (which is part of the Grand Theft Auto series). If you enjoy your late 70s and early 80s Soul / Funk, then you should check this hot site out:

Your comments and feedback are as always welcome!

Please check The Soul of Amsterdam for excellent photos of musicians.

Subvertising and Culture Jamming

Posted in Art, Life with tags , , , on November 18, 2008 by Writerful

Subvertising is a composition of the words ‘subvert’ and ‘advertising’. The main aim of subvertising, also referred to as culture jamming, is an attempt at sabotaging advertising / political campaigns, the encroachment of multi national corporations on everyday life, and attacking other high profile targets.

As distinct from graffiti subvertising is the practice of lampooning or satirizing corporate and political advertisements in order to make a statement or to subvert its intended message. This can take the form of a completely new image being overlayed or an alteration to the existing image. Subvertisements are also referred to as meme hacks and can be aligned with the other social hacking or culture jamming sub cultures.

Subvertisements by their nature incorporate certain elements of graffiti culture by use of a messages sprayed onto an advertisement or more complex paste ups which can change the advertisements meaning and elicit a completely different emotional response from that intended. The justification by those responsible for this type of culture hacking is that they do not give their permission to have their senses bombarded on a daily basis by corporate advertisements, so it is their way of reclaiming their personal power and public space.

Subvertising can be done in such a subtle way that it ‘flies under the radar’ and thus escapes the conscious filtering mechanism leading to unexpected epiphanies or the exposure of the subtle form of brainwashing and subliminal techniques very often used in adverts. Many people are not aware that many well known household brands are using ancient sacred symbolism in their logos which have a powerful effect on our sub conscious mind. Culture hacking or jamming by its very nature aims at addressing this deliberate form of exploitation and control by corporate and political powers.

Featuring: Os Gêmeos

Os Gêmeos are two twin brothers from São Paulo in Brazil. Os gêmeos actually translates to twins. Their artwork varies from casual graffiti to complicated murals. Their work has a very artistic touch to it and the characters in their work are often of a dreamlike appearance.

Virtue Ruins Beauty

I enjoy print making as an artform. It is a great way to express yourself and I liked it long before I had heard about Stencils as a serious artform. Screen printing produces some amazing results. Screen prints are nomally found in galleries and some can get quite dear.

Virtue Ruins Beauty is a piece by an artist called Give Up. The images below are a paste up from an abandoned building in Houston, Texas. See link: Citynoise Website. I wanted to share it as an example of good streetart. It is an interesting idea to return the art found in galleries back to the street, so putting the prints into abandoned buildings, as opposed to bring the streetsart into the galleries or putting protective covers onto graffiti (as happened with a Banksy graffiti in Melbourne).

The Best Song of All Times?

Posted in Life, Music with tags , , , , , , on November 12, 2008 by victorbiola

Impossible to answer that question. Everyone might have an opinion, some Roman dude in the year 120 AD might give a very subjective answer as a guy in the year 2212, who might quote me and name the local gig on Mars.

the-whoI live now (who would not claim that) and I would name a band my father could relate to more than I can, though does that matter? Best song ever? This question cannot be answered, the best song ever does not exist and would so much depend upon the moment and situation and person…

My personal entry would be ‘Love reign O’er Me’ by the Who (Can you see the real me? Can you? Can you?…)
